The J-Hawk varsity picked up its fifth-dual-victory of the season in a rare Tuesday “home” dual meet. But they didn’t wrestle on a blue mat, and the site was Roosevelt Middle School.
Our Varsity boys successfully hosted the Marion Wolves winning the dual 45-32 in the Roughrider small gym while enjoying their annual chance to compete on the Army Mat which was provided by the local recruiting station. The JV team won 54-6.
The move to Roosevelt celebrated the school’s 75th Anniversary of having a wrestling program that was started by Wayne Van Deest in 1950. Van Deest’s two sons and a granddaughter presented a commemorative plaque to the school honoring the milestone.
Also recognized was the son of the late Dave Shakespeare, Roosevelt’s most successful wrestler during the high school era, as well as former Roughrider Ed Popelka, from the late 50s. Former J-Hawk wrestling coach Dick Briggs, too, was on hand, also representing his brother and son.
The Briggs-Boys are certainly Roosevelt’s “First-Family of Wrestling” having had a profound influence on both the Roughriders and J-Hawks. |
