DAWSON SWEET RETURNS TO THE PODIUM

2020 CLASS 3A DISTRICT 6 CHAMPION!
Dawson Sweet continued his impressive senior season by taking home the 2020 3A District 6 title last Saturday down at Iowa City West. Dawson seeded number one had a bye in his first round. Semi-final round he beat Baker of Marion by a major deceision 12-3. In the finals he matched up against cross town rival Tate Sykora-Matthess of Cedar Rapids Washington coming home with a 3-2 decision and district championship. We had a few other wrestlers who really performed well but came up just short in third place in Austin Clifton, AJ Buzynski and Preston Bruck. |

JV places 12th. Erlacher top finisher in fifth place
Our junior varsity ended their season Saturday at the 2020 MVC JV Tournament Saturday down in Iowa City at City High. Our J-Hawks placed five wrestlers in the top eight. James Erlacher was our top place winner taking fifth place at 106 lbs. Carter Smith took home sixth place, while Max Lathrop, Luke Moses and Seth Kohen took home seventh place. On the reserve bracket Caden Dye and Jordan Range both took home sixth place finishes. |
J-Hawks fall to Cougars to end regular season
We wrapped up our regular season play with a final home dual against cross town rival Kennedy. Our J-Hawks came up on the short end in both duals losing 12-67 in varsity and 12-68 in the JV dual. Some bright spots on the nights were wins by Joel Ellis on the JV side winning by a fall in 5:25 and on the varsity side Dawson Sweet continued to win wit a pin in 5:17. Austin Clifton also shined as he pinned his opponent in 3:40. The JV team will conclude their season this weekend at the MVC tournament held at City High Saturday. Come out to support your J-Hawks one last time this season. |

Dawson Sweet is your 2020 MVC Conference Champ!
With a 6-0 decision win over Lovett of Dubuque Hempstead Dawson earns his first MVC title. Austin Clifton and Dakota Tatro both finished in seventh place. Connor Luensman, Preston Bruck and Zain Wilson both placed eighth. Thursday night will be our final home dual of the season so come out and support your J-Hawks as they try to takedown Kennedy. |
Wilson is CRANDIC Champ!
Our young guns took to the mat Monday night at host Xavier. Zane Wilson went 2-0 winning by a fall and a 5-2 decision to take home first. James Erlacher, Max Lathrop and Luke Moses all went 2-2 on the night to take home 5th place finishes. |
J-Hawks defeat Liberty on Senior Night
You always want your team to go out on senior night and bring home a win for the team, and that is exactly what our boys in blue did Thursday night beating Iowa City Liberty 51-30. Nathen Lauterwasser, AJ Buzynski, Dallas Hartgrave and Seth Konen all recorded pins for the J-Hawks. Bruck, Wilson, Sweer and Luensman all had forfeit wins. |
Rough day for our Jefferson team at home Invite
Not much can be said about this day except it was very disappointing. Connor Luensman and Preston Bruck were are lone place finishers. Connor in 7th and Preston took 8th place. |
Linn-Mar hands our J-Hawks a loss on the road
It was a rough night for both our junior varsity and varsity teams Thursday ngiht when they traveled over to Linn-Mar. Both teams came out on the losing end. The bright spot on the evening was senior Preston Bruck's 5-2 decision win over Martin in the varsity dual.
Saturdays J-Hawk Invitational was postponed until Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. due to weather conditions. |
Wrestlers compete at CRANDIC at ICCH
Monday night a group of young guns took the mat down at City High. Luke Moses and Caden Dye both placed second. Robert Moody, Zane Wilson, Karmen Hawkins, Max Lathrop, Davonn Jefferies and Payton Robinson all took home third place finishes. Luke Moses took home top honors with two great matches. He won by fall in his first match against Bouska of LM, then lost a tough match in SV-1 6-4 against Redig of CRP. |
J-Hawks fall to Hempstead at Home
The 2020 season did not start off as planned for our J-Hawks as both the varsity and Junior Varsity fell to Dubuque Hempstead Thursday night at home. We started off the night at 152 with Carson Duball getting the fall. Domicio Ndaizeye also recorded a pin. Keep an eye on this young man in the years to come. He has what it takes to make it to state. Hempstead won nine of the last eleven matches to rtake the win 20-54. The varsity team took the mat next but also fell short losing 18-52. Dawson Sweet continued his winning streak by defeated Hempsteads Lovett 2-1. Preston Bruck, Connor Luensman and AJ Buzynski also had wins on the night, AJ by a fall. |
2019 Wrap-up
Our J-Hawks ended the 2019 year with some really nice performances. Dawson Sweet won the Red Owens Classic at SE Polk. Dawson is the first J-Hawk to win the event since his brother Nick Dreckman won it in 2015. Austin Clifton also had a great day making it to the finals but falling short 2-9. Preston Bruck finished in fourth place on the day. THe JV team also had a good end of the year at the Indianola JV Worlds. Domicio Ndaizeye continues to impress winning his bracket. Carson Duball also made it to the finals but lost to Watson from Ankeny Centennial. Josh Norton also made the finals but fell short of the title taking runner-up. Damon Rector and Carter Smith both took home third place finishes. Jame Erlacher and Elijah Phillips both brought home fourth place finishes. |

The JV split again this weekend with a team going to both Marion and the always tough SE Polk JV Duals. At this time no results have been posted for the Marion invite, but the squad that went to SEP came home with a 6th place team finish. We had two wrestlers go undefeated at 5-0 on the day in Carter Smith and Justin Burnett. Jordan Range, Damon Rector and Luke Moses also all had really nice days going 4-1. |
J-Hawks bring home two wins.
The wrestling team traveled to Dubuque Wahlert Thursday night for their first road dual of the season. Both the junior varsity and varsity teams came home with victories. The JV team opened up the action with a dominating 48-6 win. Karmen Hawkins showed us again that girls CAN wrestle with two wins on the night. She started off the meet with a come from behind win and pin to start off the night and then ended the JV dual with another come from behind win and pin! "This girl has worked hard this season to get her hand raised and help kick start a fun season to come for girls wrestling" coach Garber said following the dual. The varsity team kept things rolling with a nice 40-27 win. After a forfeit win for Arnold Agut to start off the night, Wahlert ran off five straight wins, but would see only one more win in the next 7 matches as our J-Hawks recorded four falls en route to the win. Wilson, Bruck, Clifton and Lauterwasser all recorded pins. A.J. Buzynski ended the dual with a 10-0 major decision.
Saturday the varsity team will head to Western Dubuque and the junior varsity teams will split up and go to Marion and SE Polk. |
CRANDIC OPENS SEASON AT IC WEST
The CRANDIC season is underway and our J-Hawks traveled down to West Monday night for the first competition of the season. Luke Moses brought home top honors going 2-0 on the night and the teams lone individual champion. Taking runner-up finishes were Connor Luensman, Justin Burnett, James Erlacher, Kalvini Setik, Payton Robinson and Robert Moody. |

Dawson Sweet goes 3-1 at Cedar Falls Invitational Saturday. Dawson won his opening match by a fall. In his quarter final match he had a tight 1-0 win. Losing 3-8 in the semi's Dawson came back to beat W-SR's Staack 8-2. Dallas Hartgrave and Austin McAllister both had good days at this always tough tournament with both of them going 2-2 on the day.
Coach Garber took a line up of our JV wrestlers to the Tipton varsity tournament Saturday with freshman Connor Luensman bringing home top honors with a runner up finish. Wrestler of the day award though goes out to junior Carter Smith. Carter lost his opening round match but came back to win his next three matches to bring home a third place finish with two wins by fall and a 6-0 decision win of his SE Polk opponent in the 3rd place match.
Coach Welsh took another group over to Kennedy for their annual JV tournament. Overall he was pleased with how the kids fought but knows they have a lot to work on to get to the next level. |
J-Hawks fall short to #5 Iowa City West |
The J-Hawks gave #5 IA City West a good run tonight by winning 4 of the first 5 matches, and 2 of the last 3 but fell short 34-46.
The J-Hawks led with 5 total falls by 113-Austin McAllister (5:08), 120-Austin Clifton (1:30), 126-Dakota Tatro (:51), 138-Arnold Agut (3:01), and senior 145-Damon Rector (2:54).
#4 Dawson Sweet recorded 7 takedowns en route to a 15-4 major decision. |
