Iron Sharpens Iron Camp Week
9 J-Hawks attended the ISI Team Camp this past week in Cedar Falls. They got to wrestle in 8 duels, with some of them getting more than one match in each session. They learned technique from Penn State National Champion Roman Bravo-Young (RBY), Former Hawkeye wrestler Matt McDonough, UNI All-American Parker Keckeisen, and Assistant Coach at Wartburg Landon Williams. The wrestlers had a great time bonding with each other between sessions, swimming, going to a movie, and playing video games. The coaches enjoyed watching them compete, learn and having fun. Jefferson falls to Dubuque Hempstead
It was a rough night on Monday as our J-Hawks faced one of the best teams in the state in Dubuque Hempstead. Both our JV and varsity teams lost. We have a ways to go to get back to that level again, but we have the right people in place to make it happen and the kids in the room who are willing to give it 100% every time they step on the mat. We will now take our winter break and be back in action in 2021. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! |
Saturday our J-Hawks traveled to Monticello for their duals tournament. The team went 1-3 on the day. The team has a ways to go but coach Martin is pleased with how the kids have responded on and off the mat, "They are going out and giving it 100% in the practice room and on the mat. As a coach you can not ask for more." Jeff lost to Monticello 65-14, with Zane Wilson winning by a 4-2 decision. Against Nashua-Plainfield we fell 66-16. Zane Wilson won for the second time on the day by a major decision 10-2. Nick Graham was a winner by fall in our 45-24 loss to East Buchanan. The lone dual win came in a 39-36 win against Waukon. The current Jefferson coaching staff would like to congratulate coach Briggs on his induction into the
IWOCA Hall of Fame. |
Dick Briggs became Jefferson’s sixth wrestling coach in 1983. It was a natural fit for “Briggsie” to come home to Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School after previous coaching stints at Western State College in Colorado and Cedar Rapids Washington. Dick was born and raised in Cedar Rapids attending Cleveland and Roosevelt before becoming a J-Hawk in 1971.
