Coach Sibo was back for a second night this week for open mats. He showed the wrestlers the head-in-the-hole on the front headlock, along with his sit back that made him almost impossible to ride in high school. It's fun to watch over 20 wrestlers from Jefferson and Kennedy getting better! #HardWork
We had a full house of J-Hawks and Cougar wrestlers fill the room tonight. Former J-Hawk state medalist Joseph Sibomana was the guest coach. Sibo showed the wrestlers his near wrist to a single and double leg. #WEGOTBETTER
Great first week of open Mats. The Cougars and J-Hawks are pushing each other to get better! #Champs
1990 Jefferson state champ Ali Igram was our guest coach this week. Coach Igram changed things up a bit and took the wrestlers through a body weight workout. This is something all wrestlers should learn, even if it is not as fun as learning new moves or improving technique. To be a champ, like coach Igram was, it takes more than learning technique and moves. Thank you coach Igram for showing the boys some great ways to control their weight.
2x LaSalle High School state champ, Iowa Hawkeye Big 10 Champ John Regan was our guest coach tonight. Coach Regan demonstrated to the boys a fireman's carry dump, an outside carry and his chicken wing. We want to say THANK YOU to coach Regan for helping our boys and giving back to the sport we all love. #Westside Proud.
Coach Topher and the boys show off their Eastern Iowa Wrestling Club swag after a great workout session with coach Topher.
1990 Jefferson state medalists former assistant Ed Burbell and his son Cam were the guest coaches this week for open mat night. Coach Ed showed the cross wrist to the Burnell wing. He used the wing for a school record for falls. We love that former JHawk family members give back to the program. #BLEEDBLUE
Former Central City head wrestling coach, and state tournament scoring official Cory Vaupel was the guest coach this week. Coach Vaupel demonstrated to the wrestlers a Half Nelson, Simpson and Paradise. Its fun watching these young wrestlers grow with every guest coach that comes in!

4x state finalist, 3-time state champ and Iowa Hawkeye national qualifier Topher Carton was our guest coach this week. Coach Carton showed the boys many different setups and takedowns. It was a great night of learning for the boys. #Westside
This week former J-Hawk and Cornell Ram wrestler Jacob Scherzer was our guest coach. Coach Scherzer showed the boys his left handed high crouch. #bleedblue
Former JHawk Tavian Rashad was back last week as guest coach. Coach Tav showed the boys a few different double legs. along with a cradle and butcher. Proud of the boys for putting in the extra work to get better!! #WESTSIDE
Former JHawk Matt Culver was our guest coach this week. Coach Culver showed his sweep single and switch. It is so fun watching these boys improve every time they show up for open mat.
Another open mat opportunity to get better is in the books. This week's guest was Wartburg national champ and J-Hawk alum Kyle Briggs. Kyle showed some takedowns and returns. He also taught the boys a new fun gamed called Towers. Taft won the MS challenge with two wrestlers. Both Wilson and Roosevelt had one attend.

Another night of open mats is in the books. Our guest coach tonight was former J-Hawk head coach Dick Briggs. Coach Briggs showed a wide variety of different takedowns tonight. The wrestlers learned a lot! Wilson won the middle school challenge with 4 wrestlers. Taft was 2nd with 2. Open mats are every Tuesday until the end of the school year, from 6:30 to 7:30.
We have a different guest coach each week. This teaches the wrestlers multiple different styles and techniques. Don't miss this great opportunity to get better!

In January, the IGHSAU voted to sanction girl's wrestling in the state of Iowa. The first ever girl's wrestling season will begin in October. On Sunday, March 27th, 2022, Jefferson High School hosted a free clinic for girls interested in learning more about wrestling and to come try it out with other girls.

The clinic started with a basic overview of the sport, teaching the girls basic rules and scoring for wrestling. Next, the girls from 1st grade through 12th grade, went up the wrestling room to practice and learn the basics from clinician Chloe Clemons. Chloe has been a female wrestler for many years and has been successful at all levels, including being a 2x State Champ and a National Junior college Champion.

Also, at the clinic to help Chloe work with the girls and demonstrate moves were Kenzie Childers and Lexi Byrne both state place winners at the 2022 IWCOA Girl's State meet.

Most of the girls that entered the wrestling room had little to no experience with wrestling. Overall, the day was a huge success. The girl's were all smiling and appeared to have fun, while also learning a lot in a short amount of time.

Open rooms have started up again.
Coach John Hegarty was our first guest coach of the Spring. Coach Hegarty showed us his spiral series.

We had 12 young men show up tonight. It's a great start. But we need more. Taft had 4 kids show. Challenge to the middle schools let's see which school can get the most kids to open mats. ~ Coach Martin

R.I.P. Wyatt Schultz
Not only did Jefferson High School and I lose a friend, the wrestling family lost it’s best friend, ambassador, promoter and giver. We all know Wrestling was his passion. When it wasn’t wrestling season you could find him on the sidelines of the football field or running around the softball or baseball fields to get all the great action photos Wyatt was known for.
