The first US Army wrestling camp is in the books! We finished the camp with a dual between coaches Britton Holmes and Nina Pham. The wrestlers had a lot of fun. Former J-Hawk and US Army national team member Brent Stepanek (Spud) was coach today for the final open mat of the summer. Coach showed his Arm drag and some Jiu-Jitsu. The boys had lots of fun learning from Spud!

Coach Martin got to be coach and run open mats today. The kids did some fun drills to emphasize basic skills of wrestling. Coach showed the boys a snap to go behind. And, finished up the fun day with a game of ultimate ball. |

Our National Champ had to cancel. Former J-Hawk and Concordia wrestler Frank Budederi stepped in. He showed the kids his set-up that he can do any shot from. He taught his sweep single and outside carry off his set-up. Thanks to Coach Orton and Garber for helping out! |

Two Cedar Rapids Veterans Enrolled in the Purple Heart Hall of Honor

With some instruction on the process (and a lot of perserverance), I was able to help retired coach John Hegarty enroll two former Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School students in the Purple Heart Hall of Honor. On March 9th, Cpl. Dennis Anthony Gunder was enrolled. Then on March 13th, Sgt. Jon Richard Winger was enrolled. The school recently honored these veterans at a rededication ceremony in January. This weekend the JV competed in their last competition of the season. It was a great day for both the JV scoring team finishing in the top 10 and the reserves finishing with some great wins. Congratulations to Parker Chyma for winning the 215lbs JV bracket and Jackson Woods winning the 190 lbs reserve bracket. |

“The Dubuque Senior Rams came to town for the final home dual meet of the season on Thursday, January 25.
The J-Hawks also celebrated Military Appreciation Night and a rededication of the newly updated Winger-Gunder Trophy Case.
Long-ago teammates of fallen soldiers Jon Winger (’64) and Dennis Gunder (’65) reassembled to pay tribute to their comrades while commemorating the 56th anniversary of their deaths in the jungles of Vietnam. Also present were three generous members of the local Army Recruiters Center.” |

We held our 50th anniversary J-Hawk tournament Monday. The boys wrestled well and kept the proud J-Hawk tradition going. We also recognized former head coach Bill McNiel who founded the event and his champions from the very first invitational. Along with former head coaches Dick Briggs, Matt Orton and current head coach Rob Martin. |

The JV came to fight and battle for some hardware. The JV J-Hawks came away with 9 first place finishes in a very tough tournament out at Benton. The coaching staff is proud of the fight that was given today by all competitors. |

The JV took another long road trip to Indianola for JV Worlds Tournament. 24 young men competed in 8 man brackets with some tough competition from the west side of the state. 2 wrestlers came home with a tasty treat after beating 2 World Champs! What a great way to go into break! |
Congrats to the JV team for an exciting 32 to 30 victory over Wahlert. The varsity had a back and forth dual that came down to the last match. Unfortunately, the J-hawks came up short 36 to 42. |

The JV start their season opener with a win over Cedar Falls on Thursday. It was a great atmosphere for the young men and for some the first time wrestling on competition blue under the lights for the 23-24 season. |
J-Hawks took an early bus to SEP to compete in JV Duals. The team wrestled some tough competition and finished in 4th place. Congrats to Dreni Zeneli and Zayd Igram on going 5-0, and Jackson Woods going 3-0 on the day. |

Monday night the Freshmen and Sophomores went to Iowa City West to compete in the First CRandIC of the season. A lot of great matches with 27 J-Hawk wrestlers. Lot of great things are coming from this group as they keep improving . Lots of work to be put in this season, keep it up! |

The JV boys took on the first weekend tournament in Tipton. The young men competed well and had a few of the new wrestlers get their first High school win. The J-Hawks finished with two wrestlers standing on the podium at 113 Zaid Igram went 2-1 finishing 3rd place, and at 215 Girbril Shaw went 3-1 finishing 3rd. |
