Coe All-American Cade Hornback was in tonight! He taught the boys his single and HC takedown. He also showed his ankle break down. |
|
The trophy case dedicated in 1968 to honor Jon Winger and Dennis Gunder for their dedication to Jefferson wrestling and service in the military has been updated. Jon and Dennis gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in the Vietnam war. |
|
Want to give Tara Murray a huge shoutout for painting the new weight classes on the fight ladder and Coach Martin's favorite quote on the wall! #wrestlingfamily #westside |
|
Thanks to ATC Suzi Guider we have a historic picture of the state tournament, back when it was held in the old Veterans Memorial arena. |
Westside Wrestling Club practice will start on November 13th at 6pm. Parents we will have a meeting in the cafeteria that night right after you drop your child off at practice. So if all possible please plan on attending. Remember your wrestler needs to have their AAU card before starting practice. Click HERE to download pdf form. |
|
We had our first open mat of the year last night, with a great turnout.
Kids from the Westside Club, some new faces and a bunch of returners. We even had a couple alumni show up. #wrestlingfamily. |

Jefferson’s only 3-time state champion (Mel Wieland, seen at right) visited his old stomping grounds recently along with Coach Martin and Mel’s teammate Cal Jenkins (left). Wieland won state titles in 1960, 1961 and 1962. He was also a Big 10 champion for the Hawkeyes who later enjoyed a long and successful career as a teacher and coach in Cedar Rapids. Mel and his wife Caroline live in Las Vegas today. Thanks for visiting, Mel. |

We lost another J-Hawk legend... Gary Bentrim (1955-2023)
The Jefferson Wrestling Family lost one of its finest athletes on September 4, 2023 with the passing of Gary Wayne Bentrim.
Known for his explosive arm-drag and unstoppable cross-face cradle, Gary was a J-Hawk state champion in 1973 on Jeff’s 3A state championship squad. He was also a three-time national champion for Northern Iowa.
His contributions to the Panther NCAA championship teams in 1975 and 1978 showcased his unwavering determination and skill. He was forever immortalized with inductions into the Jefferson High School, Iowa High School Athletics, University of Northern Iowa, NCAA Division II, and Glen Brand Wrestling Halls of Fame.
His legacy will never be forgotten. Our sincere condolences go out to his family.

Proud of this former J-Hawk Keenan Stewart. He received his degree last spring. It was awesome to see him give present his mother with his diploma after the game today at NW. Keenan has been a 3 year starter at defensive tackle for UTEP. Proud to have been a coach to him and see him achieve all these milestones. |
|
The Jefferson wrestling coaches had a great time today at the Ellis Golf Course in support of the CRJAG Alumni Golf Outing. They might not have had the lowest score, but it was hard finding another group who had so much fun. And if you want to know who helped carry the team, you can ask coaches Martin, Garber and Herman. |
|
JEFF MAT FOUNDING FATHERS RETURN (L-R) J-Hawk state champions Al Sievertsen (127 in 1963), Steve Childs (95 in 1962 & 63), and Cal Jenkins (127 in 1962) visited their old stomping grounds recently-six decades after graduating from Jefferson. Al lives in Walla Walla, Washington. Steve now calls Honolulu, Hawaii home. Cal remains a hometown guy. |
|

Thank you Jeanne Barbian and Maddison Bulman for helping her this morning, and to all the wrestlers, coaches and teachers who participated!
The boys and girls are going to be ready to start 2023 off right. |

Even with multiple wrestlers out due to illness or injuries the boys brought home three place winners. Luke Moses and Cade Chism both placed fourth, and Shukuru Bodederi took home runner-up.
Coach Herman took a handful of wrestlers over to Marion for their JV tournament. Some of these guys got to see their first taste of high school competition. We battled throughout the day and will improve as we continue working through the season. The bright spot for the J-Hawks was Gibril Shaw going 3-0 and placing first in his bracket.
The JV took a trip down to SEP this weekend for JV duals.

Coach Hlubek is a Jefferson graduate and currently teaches and coaches at Wilson MS. She grew up in the wrestling community and has a passion for coaching.
We are excited to have Coach Hlubek on board to get our girls wrestling program started and to lead it into the future.
Vicki has a record of increasing participation numbers in the sports she coaches which will serve our girls program well. She will do more than simply coach wrestling, she will help develop young female students athletes. |
